Shelby County Art in The Garden 2007The Shelby County Art in the Garden tour was this past Sunday June 24th. Take a peek at some of the sites in our garden gallery here Winter Seeding in Spring?Shelby county Ohio has seen another one of those early spring warm ups. Not only are the forsythia blooming, but ornamental pears, cherries, and some of the early crabapples. Alas Wednesday night it will drop to freezing temperatures. We will have 4 or 5 nights in a row with bitter cold. This will burn a lot of the tender foliage on plants like lilacs and it will shorten the blooms on weeping cherries. Do you Collect Seeds?Seed collecting has enabled varieties of plants to passed down from generation to generation. Heirloom tomato seeds are shared amongst families and friends. Favorite fragrant flowers are traded and shared. EMERALD ASH BORERAn update on the Emerald Ash Borer situation. The affected area now is in excess of 40,000 square miles with around 20 million ash trees killed by EAB. Emerald Ash Borer has already been detected in a quarter of Ohio's counties. The Ohio Department of Agriculture has designated 10,000 ash detection trees. It is likely as ODA continues removal and peeling of these ash detection trees additional EABs will be found. Visiting the Cox ArboretumI stopped by the Cox Arboretum in Dayton this past Wednesday August 16th. Many were drawn to the butterfly house. I went on by (Looked like a full house) and wandered through the collections of conifers, oaks, crabapples and other interesting trees. Art in the Garden Tour 2006July 16 a very hot week finished with Gateway Arts Council’s “Art in the Garden” Tour. I didn't attend, however my mom (Rose Goins) snapped some pictures and I'll post and comment the best I can. Kildeer at the Garden CenterI've always thought kildeer were one of the more interesting birds found in Ohio. There are usually a pair around the garden center each year, but I don't always locate the nest. Great Springtime BloomsCreeping PhloxStill looking back at some spring blooms. Mounds of this early sping blooming groundcover will creep outward over the years. Creeping phlox is best purchased in spring for nice vigorous plants. At least that's the way it is at our garden center. |
